“My garden is about love. Life is about sharing.” ~ PEARL FRYAR
Dear Readers, Community, Friends,
What is your greatest act of love?
If Pearl Fryar believed what others saw in him, the world would never know how far “Love, Peace + Goodwill” could spread. With 10,000+ visitors annually to his abstract topiary garden, these are the last giant words you see, etched into the grounds of his multi-acre garden.
What sparked this giant act of love? Originally, Fryar had hoped to settle within the city limits of Bishopville, SC. However, faced with resistance from white residents who doubted his commitment to properly upkeep his yard, he chose to establish his residence on the town’s outskirts. Undeterred by skepticism, he diligently transformed his yard into a world-renowned garden sanctuary using discarded plants from local nurseries, ultimately earning the prestigious “Yard of the Month” award in 1985.
If you have time, watch his documentary film, “A Man Named Pearl.” But – in the trailer alone – you will see Pearl ascending a 20+ foot ladder carrying a hefty hedge trimmer to sculpt the top of one of his topiaries!
Or, read this short article in Outstanding American Gardens, where luscious full-page photographs make you feel like you are right there.
Only have a few minutes? Great Big Story made a sweet, short video about Pearl, which includes stunning arial shots of his topiary paradise. {photo credits: Great Big Story}
Pearl is now in his mid-80s, so care of the garden is not what it once was. Hopefully, steps will be taken to keep up his life’s work. You can still visit the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden: 145 Broad Acres Rd, Bishopville, SC 29010 • (803) 484-5581 • TUES - SAT 10am - 4pm
