“I went out to the hazel wood,

Because a fire was in my head,

And cut and peeled a hazel wand,

And hooked a berry to a thread;

And when white moths were on the wing,

And moth-like stars were flickering out,

I dropped the berry in a stream

And caught a little silver trout.”

~ W.B. YEATS

Dear Readers, Community, Friends,

How many mornings, upon awakening from deep slumber do we yawn, stretch, … and with armored mug in hand boldly draw the curtains to face the starting day? And then, the news – with never-ending tragedy – rips it all away?

Today I am hear to tell you that there is also such good being done in this world, even right outside our back doors.

100+ Women Who Care Asheville, recently awarded $10,000 to: Mountain True’s PlasticFree WNC program.  I attend their quarterly meetings and always find them to be hopeful and uplifting. Three nonprofits are nominated to present how they serve WNC, and how they would benefit from the money. Usually by the third presentation, there is not a dry eye in the house. The need for many things in our community is great and constant, but here in the room is the great power to do something about it. Thinking about joining? Visit their site here.

worldchanging 101

Then, down the road in little Black Mountain you will find David Lamotte, a world-renowned singer/songwriter and peace advocate who wrote a book called, “Worldchanging 101 – Challenging the Myth of Powerlessness,” where the road sign on the cover reads: “You are changing the world, whether you like it or not.” {He’s talking to me and you.}

ABOUT THE BOOK: “Drawing on stories from his own work and interviews with others in Guatemala, India, South Africa, Australia, Palestine, the United States, and Bosnia, LaMotte methodically challenges internalized narratives that keep us immobile in the face of problems that confront us as communities, nations, and a world. The book is at once challenging, encouraging and inspiring. In an accessible, story-based style. Here, LaMotte helps us to discern both our potential to have an impact and how we go about getting started. Anyone who wants to live a life that matters will find something of value here.”

He did a TedX talk about it this past March, and TED picked it up and is making it available TODAY worldwide to its 40 million viewers. Here’s the link.

ABOUT THE TALK: “Heroism is overrated. It is always movements that lead to large-scale change, though our dominant cultural narrative of change focuses on individuals. It is not naive to think you can change the world, it is naive to think you could be in the world and not change it, but that change happens in community.”Go ahead and give it a share if you find it worthy.

So, how do you wish to change the world? What gift can you give us today? Never underestimate the power of one small, kind act.

meteor

And after looking inward, remember to look up: in the heavenly realms tonight and tomorrow, two meteor showers will peak. You might be able to see five shooting stars each hour, some being “fireballs,” which are very bright and long-lasting. {neat-o.} I always find hope when I look up at the night sky. It helps me put perspective on the blink of an eye that is our human existence down below.

Perseid meteors will streak through Earth’s atmosphere starting in mid-July. A first quarter moon won’t interfere with the shower’s peak on the mornings of August 11, 12 and 13.

THE TOP 7 REASONS TO AUTOMATE OPEN ENROLLMENT

Enrollment is the single most challenging aspect of providing employee benefits. The way the system works requires employees to sign up and register for their benefits during certain open enrollment periods. Enrolling properly is also a must, and many employees aren’t ready with all their information, paperwork, and options selected when the enrollment window opens.

Greetings!

Has anyone dried out from all the rain we’ve been having? No sooner did I comment on how dry a summer it had been, when the rains came crashing in. My family and I have been doing some camping, but the rain has not dampened our mood. I cherish this slow time with my family. Kids grow up so fast.

Need insight about Open Enrollment? This month’s blog, “The 7 Top Reasons to Automate Open Enrollment” will help you navigate this enrollment season.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. Fall is right around the corner!

Warm regards,

Michael
