“Instructions for living a life: Pay attention; Be astonished; Tell about it.”  ~ MARY OLIVER

Dear Readers, Community, Friends,

The other evening, I saw the first of the fireflies dancing in the expanse of my backyard. So rhythmic, so enchanting. It struck me that one thing relative to another creates a very interesting perspective. I thought of “to what is my life like the few seconds of illumination of a firefly?” I saw the Earth looking at its tiny occupants (us), who believe we are so significant, but comparatively, live only a speck in Earth’s time.

I must say, though, that it lights a fire under me, making me ask as Mary Oliver did, “What is it that you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

It seems now is the perfect time to stop for a moment, reflect on all that has happened this past year, take stock of what we learned, and what opportunities for growth we have not yet actualized. But first, a compassionate pause. Utilize this quiet moment to create a new mindset to show up in the world so that you can bring your fullest self, your truest expression, and share it with our world.

You are what we need right now.

WITH DEEP GRATITUDE, WE CELEBRATE MICHAEL MURPHY

Everything happened seemingly overnight. Michael sent us home to work remotely to keep us safe. The quarantine hit, businesses closed their doors, and the fog of unknown crept in. Michael rallied business colleagues to create a series of webinars as a way to quickly communicate to our community everything they would need to know that could possibly help them stay afloat.

Being a local business, Michael was accustomed to a concentrated core of folks attending our talks. But since COVID-19 left no business unaffected, he put solutions in place to expand attendee capacity and surveys to help people communicate their dire questions so the presenters would focus on top-of-mind concerns.

A timelessness set in as he would spend hours – sometimes days – preparing for these presentations, and answering all calls and emails afterward – regardless of the hour of the day or the day of the week.

As his assistant, I could see him reaching outside of his comfort zone to guide our community through this storm. He poured his heart out to our local businesses, and it made me feel proud to be a part of his team.

EXPAND YOUR HIRING POOL: HOW UNCONVENTIONAL TALENT HELPS

Does having a college degree make you better at a job than a person without one? Maybe. Maybe not. But culture is stubborn and in some cases, like the workplace arena, it has coined for us a way of hiring and sifting through resumes that may have deprived us of success for centuries.

I was surprised and humbled to be awarded Small Business Leader of the Year from the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce.

I want to note that our community support last year was a joint effort of the Platinum team and many community partners. I would like to thank: Sabrina Presnell Rockoff and Murphy Horne Fletcher of McGuire Wood & Bisette for presenting with me on all 16 of our COVID-19 Webinars. As well as: Sandra Dennison of the Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC), Ken Kaplan of Kaplan CFO Solutions, Matthew L. Groome of Colton Groome & Company, Clark Duncan from the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, and Timothy Love from the Buncombe County Government, North Carolina. We could not have done it without your valuable participation!

Let’s continue to support and uplift each other. It is what makes the place we live in truly special.

Warm regards,

Michael
