“If everything around seems dark, look again, you may be the light.” ~ RUMI
Dear Readers, Community, Friends,
Where is home? And, how intimately do you know it? And it, ... you?
Humans have many ways of measuring time. In Japan they poetically mark the awakening in spring to the slumbering of winter with 72 microseasons. What a special way to create a sense of place. Below is just a snippet of some of my favorites:
FEB 24-28 ~ Mist starts to linger
MAR 6-10 ~ Hibernating insects surface
MAR 16-20 ~ Caterpillars become butterflies
MAR 21-25 ~ Sparrows start to nest
MAR 31 ~ APR 4 - Distant thunder
APR 5-9 ~ Swallows return
APR 15-19 ~ First rainbows
MAY 5-9 ~ Frogs start singing
JUN 21-26 ~ Self-heal withers
July 17-22 ~ Hawks learn to fly
AUG 3-7 ~ Great rains sometimes fall
AUG 18-22 ~ Thick fog descends
SEP 18-22 ~ Swallows leave
SEP 23-27 ~ Thunder ceases
SEP 28 - OCT 2 ~ Insects hole up underground
NOV 22-26 ~ Rainbows hide
JAN 1-4 ~ Wheat sprouts under snow
JAN 30 - FEB 3 ~ Hens start laying eggs
On November 22nd, I noticed some wintery, blue, low-lying clouds. I jotted it down. Next year, I will look for them again this time of year.
A little assignment for 2024: create a list of your own microseasons. Write down the little shifts in nature you notice where you live, and remember to include the date. Then, in 2025, get this list back out and notice if any patterns repeat on similar days.
